Smoothie Sailing to a Healthy Body

With bathing suit season creeping upon us, now is the time to start shedding those unwanted winter pounds. A healthy body starts from the inside, and a great way to kickstart a diet is with smoothies. But fear not! Jumpstarting your diet with smoothies doesn’t have to mean living off of pureed veggies and fruits for days. Research suggests that a moderate, simple diet where one meal a day is replaced with a concoction of fruits and vegetables is better for those of us who are looking to lose 5 to 10 pounds. This can boost metabolism and enhance your diet and exercise regimen. And it won’t leave you starving with low energy at the end of the day!

When making your smoothie, follow this one simple rule: try to maintain a ratio of 4 veggie servings to 1 fruit serving in your recipe. Too much fruit may have a detrimental effect on your diet. If sweetener is needed, try honey. Experiment! Mix nutrient-rich foods that have subtle flavors with bold-flavored ingredients.

Here is a recipe I love to use in my own home that is packed with vitamins and minerals and will boost your metabolism, not to mention continue to strengthen your immune system through the last few weeks of flu season.

Kickstart Smoothie

Yields: 2
1/2 cup blueberries
2 cups stemmed and chopped spinach, kale or spirulina
1 Hass avocado
1/4 cup coconut shavings
1/4 cup cacao nibs
Whey protein - approximately 20 to 30 grams. Try to find non-denatured from grass-fed organic cows if possible.
1 cup almond milk
1/2 cup ice

Here are a few more ingredients that can be added to any smoothie that will enhance your recipes even more:

Spirulina: A true superfood in every sense, spirulina has protein, iron and amino acids essential for weight loss. It also contains chlorophyll, which clears toxins from your bloodstream.

Cacao Nibs: A natural way to add the flavor of chocolate to your smoothie without adding sugar, cacao nibs are a good source of iron, calcium and zinc. They are also packed with flavonoids, the antioxidants that remove free radicals in your body.

Wishing you SMOOTHIE sailing to a healthy body!
